The Chosen One – Miguel Zenón – Golden City (Miel Music)

Share

Grammy-winning alto saxophonist Miguel Zenón has never been one for churning out the studio albums for the sake of it. Each project seems considered, researched and meticulously delivered. Golden City follows that pattern as Zenón digs deep in to the history, politics and evolving cultural landscape of San Francisco. The suite sweeps from pre-colonial times to the current tech-dominated era. The nonet assembled for this sizeable task is more than up to the job with the killer rhythm section of Chris Tordini bass, Matt Mitchell piano and Dan Weiss drums. One Jazz favourite Miles Okazaki plays guitar and Daniel Diaz, like Zenón born in Puerto Rico, plays percussion.

It’s a multi-layered album that rewards repeated listens but also grabs from the get go.

This is our Album Of The Week on One Jazz w/c Monday 2nd September
