Renee Rosnes – Crossing Currents (Smoke Sessions)

The classic canon of the Brazilian master composers has of course been familiar ground for jazz players since the 1960s. But just occasionally an album comes along that stands out for it’s take on some of this joyous and infectious music. Veteran pianist Renee Rosnes’ Crossing Currents is just that. It was actually Wayne Shorter’s peerless  1974 Native Dancer album (if you haven’t heard it stop reading this now and go and listen) that first alerted Rosens to the composition and playing of Milton Nascimento who partnered with Shorter on that project and set her off on a lifelong love affair with Brazilian music. A Nascimento tune is one of nine on this album alongside works from Antonio Carlos Jobim, Caetano Veloso, Egberto Gismonti, Gilberto Gil, Edu Lobo and Joyce Moreno. The Brazilophiles amongst you will also be excited to hear that Moreno and Lobo guest on the album, the latter on a superb version of his classic tune Casa Forte.

For an album that’s clearly been in gestation for a long time Rosnes put together a band of her favourite musicians who could deliver with the flair the music demands. Chris Potter plays reeds, Steve Davis trombone, Shelley Brown flutes, Rogério Boccato is on percussion and John Patitucci bass. Brazilian guitarist Chico Pinheiro and the drummer Adam Cruz complete the band. Crossing Currents is a beautiful, uplifting set that has the powers to lift the spirits of those of us currently locked in to a gloomy winter! Let’s leave the last words to Renee ..

“This project has been in my thoughts for nearly three decades. I’ve always been passionate about the music, and with this incredible band, I knew I was with players who hold great respect and love for it. I also knew that together, we could make these songs come alive the way I imagined.”
