‘Ekaya’ means ‘Home’ in the Xhosa language of South Africa and is also the name of the great Abdullah Ibrahim’s band in the 1980s. Here on the show Ekaya we’ll be jumping all around the world to explore different kinds of ‘jazz’, a Black American Music form New Orleans, that has been loved, embraced and now transformed into a truly ‘world’ music. From small jazz club live recordings in Vietnam to the endless rhythms of Brazil, to the still lively scene in New York and tiny labels of Japan, we’ll dive into great jazz past and present at its homes around the globe.
