The Chosen One – Jaubi – A Sound Heart (Riaz Records)

Pakistani instrumental band Jaubi return with their excellent second album. The trio of Ali Riaz Baqar (guitar and composer), Zohaib Hassan Khan (sarangi) and Kashif Ali Dhani (tablas and percussion) are joined by trumpet player Nick Walters and saxophonist and flute player Tenderlonious for a set that beautifully combines jazz and hindustani classical music.

Here’s how the band describe their new album :

“‘A Sound Heart’ is a record centred around the concept of love, and its various forms – be it love for a partner, family or even for oneself. Each side of the album tries to capture different stages of this primal emotion. Side A represents “Desire”, with one yearning and craving for passion. Side B represents “Devotion”, contemplative and heartfelt, signifying when one is vulnerable and has the sophistication to look inwards and manifest a purified, sound heart. The album also acts as a tribute to fallen heroes, paying respect to the greatness that has come before, casting new light via cross-cultural collaboration and improvisation.”
