Recorded in 2017 but released here for the first time this joyful album finds flutist, composer and AACM stalwart Nicole Mitchell going toe-to-toe with Malian kora master Balaké Sissoko. A series of gigs in Paris in 2014 brought together Mitchell’s Black Earth Ensemble, featuring guitarist Jeff parker and a contingent of Bamako musicians under the leadership of the innovative Kora player Sissoko. The shows sparked a flame that was re-ignited in the studio some three years later and resulted in this glorious, respectful meeting of musical traditions. The name given to the project – by the esteemed writer Greg Tate – is perfect. A system of sounds and a sound system that effortlessly melds the sonics of two major music cities – Bamako and Chicago.
